INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE “ MASK KING ” PEN

The ideal device for applying “MASK KING” watercolor masking fluid.

Starting off
• Pull off the clear plastic overcap.
• Unscrew the white cap & replace it with the “quill” (Mask-King tip).
• Remove the pink tipped probe from the quill
• Use the pen like a marker. For thick lines stroke with the broad side, for thin ones stroke with the narrow. Handwriting with the pen will produce calligraphy. A nice feature is that it is s impossible to spill the fluid with either cap in place.
• Hold the pen nearly vertical.
• Touch the nib (writing tip of the pen) to the paper. Gently squeeze the bottle if necessary, until you have a “BANK” (glob of wet masking fluid), behind the nib. (See picture)

• As long as you have a bank, the pen cannot skip a spot.
• PULL the pen across the paper. Pushing it will scrape the liquid off. Maintain the bank with gentle pressure on the bottle.
• Sometimes the nib opening gets clogged. You can just pick off the mask on the outside. That will usually pull any congealed material from within the little channel. To clear the channel completely, just insert the probe.

Technique
• For thin lines hold the marker the narrow way. Don’t concern yourself about a bank. The pen is very forgiving when making thin lines.
• For precision lines, start the stroke on a piece of scrap paper. Put the scrap paper on the painting in order to mask the area before the line begins.
• You can follow a ruler or other guide, as long as the ruler is well raised above the paper.Cleanup
• Remove the quill and replace the white cap.
• Rinse out the quill and replace the probe. Always clean the probe before re-inserting into the nib.
One way to handle cleaning the inside of the quill is to just let it dry. The mask will harden, and you can pull the whole thing out in one piece.

Miscellany
• We hope that with a little experience you will love this pen. The nib is subject to wear. Its life is about 16 Ozs, about one pound of fluid, depending on usage.
• The Mask King Quill fits both 1 and 2 ounce refill bottles.
